Relocating to Calgary for Work

The employee’s side of an employer-driven move: what managed-move fine print means for choosing your own agent, the HR questions worth asking before you accept, and a five-day scouting trip that actually decides something.

Short answer

Employer moves come in two shapes. Managed moves run through a relocation-management firm (BGRS is the common one) with defined benefits and sometimes preferred-supplier arrangements — you can usually still choose your own REALTOR®, but confirm how referrals work with the coordinator early and in writing. Lump-sum packages hand you a budget and the decisions. Either way the scarce resource is the house-hunting trip: build the shortlist by video before flying, tour at commute hour, and treat buying remotely after the trip as a normal outcome rather than a failure — Alberta closings work fine at distance.

Managed move or lump sum — it changes everything

Employer relocations come in two shapes, and your agent strategy differs for each. A managed move (BGRS or another relocation-management firm) often carries preferred-supplier arrangements — you can usually still choose your own agent, but ask the coordinator early how referrals and any fee-sharing work, in writing. A lump sum is simpler: the budget is yours, and every dollar saved on the move is yours too.

What to ask HR before you accept

The five-day house-hunting trip, planned like it matters

A typical relocation package buys one scouting trip. Spent well: day one calibrating expectations against live inventory at your real budget, days two and three touring a shortlist built before you land from video walk-throughs, day four second visits and neighbourhood time at commute hour, day five either paper or a decision framework for buying remotely after you fly home — which works fine and is how half my relocation files close.

Tell me your start date, budget and what the package covers, and I’ll send back the plan: the shortlist method, the five-day itinerary structure, and the remote-purchase path if the trip isn’t enough. Employer processes handled without drama. One reply, no drip campaign.
